Cairo hosts landmark talks: Iran, IAEA sign agreement to resume cooperation
In a significant diplomatic development, Cairo became the stage for a high-level trilateral meeting on Tuesday, September 9, 2025. Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Badr Abdel Aaty, welcomed Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Mr. Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), for talks that culminated in a new agreement to resume technical cooperation between Iran and the IAEA.
The trilateral consultations centered on Iran’s nuclear program and resulted in the signing of a pivotal agreement aimed at revitalizing joint work and efforts between Iran and the international nuclear watchdog.
Both the Iranian foreign minister and the IAEA’s director general expressed deep appreciation to the President of Egypt for hosting and facilitating these important dialogues, praising Egypt’s key diplomatic efforts in creating a positive environment that led to the successful agreement.
According to Ambassador Tamim Khalaf, spokesperson for the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Cairo talks are the result of persistent diplomatic efforts by Egypt to ease tensions and lay the groundwork for the resumption of negotiations between Iran and the IAEA. Dr. Abdel Aaty, Egypt’s Foreign Minister, maintained intensive communications with both his Iranian counterpart and the IAEA leadership in recent months, working tirelessly to bridge differences and achieve an outcome that serves the interests of all parties.
Ambassador Khalaf further noted that Egypt’s mediation initiative, launched last June to restore cooperation, has now led to a practical agreement between Iran and the IAEA. The accord includes concrete steps to verify Iran’s nuclear facilities and enhance transparency measures—creating a new foundation for rebuilding mutual trust and ushering in a fresh stage of openness and engagement.
Officials highlighted that this renewed cooperation is expected to address important technical concerns while promoting regional and international security and stability.
This milestone in Cairo not only marks a turning point for the relationship between Iran and the IAEA but also showcases Egypt’s vital role on the global stage as a bridge-builder and a supporter of peace and dialogue.
