The Grand Egyptian Museum shines at UNESCO

On an autumn afternoon in Paris, the halls of UNESCO’s headquarters came alive with a sense of history and anticipation. Diplomats, culture lovers, and Egyptologists gathered from across the globe, united by a singular fascination: the enduring mystery and majesty of ancient Egypt. At the heart of this gathering was Dr. Ahmed Ghoneim, CEO of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), who stood ready to share Egypt’s latest gift to world heritage.

Dr. Ghoneim took the stage not just as a museum director, but as an ambassador of an ancient civilization. His keynote presentation traced the incredible journey of the Grand Egyptian Museum, now poised on the edge of its highly anticipated public opening near the Pyramids of Giza.

“The story of this museum,” Dr. Ghoneim explained, “is one of vision and resilience—an enduring partnership between the people of Egypt and our friends around the world.” He detailed the monumental effort behind this undertaking, spotlighting Egypt’s determination, as well as the pivotal international collaboration with countries like Japan and France.

Such alliances, he emphasized, were crucial not only in constructing the museum’s innovative architecture, but also in weaving together the technological and scientific expertise now at the museum’s heart.

More than just a building, the Grand Egyptian Museum serves as a vibrant new home for some of humanity’s greatest treasures. Its collections include tens of thousands of ancient artifacts—many never before displayed. As Dr. Ghoneim revealed on stage, visitors will marvel at the entirety of King Tutankhamun’s collection reunited for the first time, surrounded by masterpieces from every era of Egyptian civilization.

What makes GEM truly unique, however, is its marriage of past and present. Advanced conservation labs—some of the world’s most sophisticated—now lovingly restore ancient relics. Cutting-edge technology elevates storytelling, making the wonders of Ancient Egypt come alive for all generations.

A welcoming spirit guided the event, echoed in the words of H.E. Ambassador Alaa Youssef, Egypt’s Ambassador to France and Permanent Delegate to UNESCO. “With this museum,” he said in his opening remarks, “Egypt opens a new chapter, not only in its own history but in the narrative of all humanity.” Ambassador Youssef spoke warmly about the museum’s scale and ambition, as well as about the meticulous international cooperation that allowed it to flourish. He also acknowledged Dr. Khaled El-Anany—now UNESCO’s Director-General—for his steadfast leadership during his time as Egypt’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities.

The celebration resonated beyond Egyptian voices. Senior UNESCO cultural leaders, the Ambassador of Japan, and former UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova all lent heartfelt words. They celebrated Egypt’s heritage as a unifying force—one that, for centuries, has inspired art, philosophy, and science across continents.

In the audience sat ambassadors, permanent representatives, curators, scholars, French officials, and enthusiasts of Egypt’s timeless story. Their applause underscored the museum’s global appeal—and Egypt’s ever-vital place at the heart of cultural dialogue.

As the event drew to a close, Dr. Ghoneim’s invitation rang out warmly: visitors from every corner of the earth are welcome to see the Grand Egyptian Museum for themselves. “Within these walls,” he said, “the voice of ancient Egypt speaks to us all—reminding us that history is alive, and that cultural heritage belongs to every member of the human family.”

The Grand Egyptian Museum, it seems, waits to greet the world not only as a monument to the past, but as a beacon of connection, dialogue, and peace for generations to come.
