Egypt screens 18 million for chronic diseases and kidney disorders

The Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population has announced that more than 18.4 million citizens have been screened as part of the presidential initiative for the early detection and treatment of chronic diseases, as well as kidney disorders.

The ambitious program, launched in September 2021 under the leadership of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, aims to provide high-quality healthcare and raise awareness among Egyptians regarding chronic illnesses.

According to Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, official spokesperson for the Ministry of Health and Population, the initiative is being delivered through 3,601 primary healthcare units across the country. The program targets citizens over the age of 40, as well as younger adults from 18 years old with a family history of chronic health conditions.

Screenings include measurements of blood pressure, blood sugar (both random and long-term), cholesterol levels, kidney function tests, and body mass index evaluations.

In addition to these vital tests, the initiative offers educational resources to raise awareness about the risk factors associated with chronic diseases. Follow-up appointments are scheduled as needed, according to each patient’s initial results.

Dr. Abdel Ghaffar further explained that anyone diagnosed with hypertension or diabetes receives free medication and, if necessary, is referred to hospitals for further care. This program is part of Egypt’s larger efforts to reduce the prevalence of chronic kidney disease, following guidelines developed in partnership with the World Health Organization. Medical teams involved in the initiative receive ongoing training to ensure the highest standard of care.

“Patients with confirmed chronic kidney conditions are referred to hospitals for free treatment under the initiative,” Dr. Abdel Ghaffar noted, adding that medical staff at primary care units are specially trained in early detection methods for kidney issues.

The ministry calls on Egyptians suffering from chronic diseases to visit their nearest health unit to benefit from the free services provided by the presidential initiative, and take important steps to safeguard their health and well-being.
