Egypt, France share deep-rooted partnership in heritage protection

Egypt’s ambassador to France, Tarek Dahroug, said Egypt and France share a long‑standing partnership in protecting human heritage, built on close cultural and scientific cooperation that helps safeguard antiquities and promote dialogue between civilizations.

Speaking to Egypt’s MENA news agency on the sidelines of an event hosted Thursday evening by the Egyptian Embassy in Paris, Dahroug said the celebration — held at the Egyptian Cultural Center under the slogan “We celebrate our past to build our future” — marked World Heritage Day with a photo exhibition and a seminar on Egyptian heritage and bilateral cooperation.

Dahroug said the exhibition highlighted the depth of archaeological cooperation between the two countries, showcasing contributions from several French missions working in Egypt, including at the Serapeum in Saqqara, Bawit in Assiut, Assasif and Madamut in Luxor, Sheikh Hamam in Sohag, the Osiris temples in Karnak, Tanis in Sharqiya, and mission TT33. He said the displays reflected shared commitment to documenting and preserving human heritage.

The ambassador praised the strong public turnout, saying the presence of cultural and scientific figures underscored France’s deep interest in ancient Egyptian civilization and demonstrated the impact of Egypt’s cultural soft power internationally.

He stressed the importance of celebrating World Heritage Day to raise awareness of the value of heritage as a pillar of national and human identity, and as a driver of tourism and the national economy.

Dahroug added that French tourism to Egypt continues to grow, particularly to archaeological sites in Cairo, Luxor and Aswan, reflecting France’s enduring fascination with ancient Egypt.
