Egyptian authorities seize 3,000 counterfeit electrical devices in consumer protection raid

In a major crackdown on counterfeit goods, Egypt’s Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) has confiscated over 3,000 electrical appliances illegally assembled from unknown sources and falsely labeled with famous international brand names. This significant raid, conducted in Qalyubia Governorate near Cairo, follows public complaints and viral social media reports about potentially dangerous products circulating in local markets.

The CPA’s investigation revealed a large, unlicensed warehouse in the city of Khanka, where appliances—including food processors, blenders, air fryers, hair irons, and meat grinders—were being reassembled using unverified parts. These products were then falsely labeled with high electrical capacity ratings (such as “9000 watts”) and had more than 5,000 misleading stickers applied, all designed to deceive buyers about their safety, performance, and origins.

Officials say these practices pose a direct threat to consumer safety and undermine trust in Egypt’s markets as well as the national economy. The seized items, which were being sold at deceptively low prices, did not meet quality or safety standards, according to the CPA.

The head of the CPA, Ibrahim El-Seginy, emphasized that the Agency is fully committed to enforcing consumer protection laws and restoring market order. “There is no room for tolerance regarding any illegal practices that could endanger citizens or destabilize the economy," El-Seginy stated, highlighting the importance of public cooperation. He praised the vital role of Egyptian consumers in reporting suspicious activities, calling them "true partners in the protection of the community."

Authorities have transferred the case to the Public Prosecution Office, and have reaffirmed their continued efforts to monitor markets, stamp out fraudulent practices, and ensure that all products available to Egyptian consumers meet strict safety standards.

The CPA urges the public to stay vigilant and report any suspected counterfeit goods or misleading marketing through its hotline (19588), mobile app, or official website at https://cpa.gov.eg/ar-eg/.
