Egypt, EU strengthen partnership on regional security
Brussels — Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Migration, Dr. Badr Abdel Aaty, met on Monday with Ms. Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, on the sidelines of the fifth EU–Southern Neighbourhood Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Brussels.
The two officials discussed strengthening Egypt–EU relations and exchanged views on key regional developments. Dr. Abdel Aaty welcomed the EU’s ongoing support for Egypt, including the recent approval by the European Parliament and Council of a €4 billion tranche of macro-financial assistance. He also reiterated Egypt’s commitment to deepening cooperation within the forthcoming EU Mediterranean Charter.
The meeting addressed the situation in Gaza, with Minister Abdel Aaty expressing Egypt’s efforts to broker a ceasefire and resolve outstanding issues through negotiations. He emphasized the urgent need to end Israeli hostilities, lift the blockade on civilians, and allow unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, while reiterating Egypt’s opposition to the displacement of Palestinians. Abdel Aaty added that Egypt plans to host an international conference on Gaza’s reconstruction following a ceasefire and invited broad European participation.
On Libya, Dr. Abdel Aaty stressed the importance of respecting Libya’s sovereignty and unity, the withdrawal of all foreign forces, and support for UN-led efforts to restore legitimate, unified governance. He also reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to a comprehensive political solution in Syria, calling for unity and stability in the country.
The discussions also covered ongoing crises in Sudan and Somalia. Dr. Abdel Aaty reaffirmed Egypt’s support for Sudan’s stability and unity, the preservation of its national institutions, and positive engagement with international efforts to achieve a ceasefire and relieve humanitarian suffering. He also underlined Egypt’s solidarity with Somalia in its efforts to restore security, stability, and effective governance.
Egypt’s Foreign Minister expressed appreciation for the EU’s partnership and voiced hope for continued close cooperation on common regional priorities.
