Egypt unveils renovated Historic Azbakeya Park in central Cairo
In a significant step towards revitalizing Cairo’s historic heart, Egyptian Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly has inspected the newly restored Azbakeya Park following the completion of major renovation works. The park, one of the city's oldest green spaces, is set to reopen soon, offering Cairo residents a much-needed oasis and recreational hub in the bustling city.
Accompanied by senior officials—including the Ministers of Housing and Local Development, the Governor of Cairo, and representatives from both UNESCO’s Human Settlements Programme and heritage organizations—Dr. Madbouly toured the park to review its transformation.
The renovations focused on restoring the park’s unique historical and architectural character, including the renewal of its famous lake, historic fountain, Roman theatre, and ancient trees—ensuring their preservation for generations to come. Heritage buildings overlooking the park, as well as pathways, pergolas, and public venues, received a special facelift to reflect and honor Cairo’s cultural legacy.
Dr. Madbouly emphasized the importance of maintaining top operational standards to protect the park's restored heritage and ensure its sustainability as a cherished communal space.
Alongside the park's restoration, the project also introduced a new book market, replacing the old iconic Azbakeya Wall market. Vendors previously based at the historic location were awarded contracts for newly built kiosks, all designed in a unified, culturally sensitive architectural style, and named after celebrated Egyptian writers and thinkers. Improved facilities, like bookshops and cafés, are expected to enhance both the market and visitor experience.
The revitalization of Azbakeya Park is part of a broader initiative to revive "Khedivial Cairo"—the city’s historic core—by restoring its parks, markets, and landmarks, aiming to reconnect people with Cairo’s rich urban heritage and create more liveable public spaces.
The government’s efforts have been warmly received by beneficiaries, who expressed pride in their new environment and hope for a vibrant future as Cairo embraces its legacy while moving towards renewal.
