Egypt’s Damietta Port receives record-breaking bulk carrier
Egypt’s Ministry of Transport announced that Damietta Port has received the Panama-flagged bulk carrier YANG FAN, arriving from Singapore with a cargo of slag ore imported from China, marking the largest bulk shipment in the port’s history at approximately 144,780 tonnes.
The ministry said the arrival of the 289‑metre-long vessel, which has a beam of 45 metres and a draft of 16 metres, reflects the port’s growing operational capabilities and its readiness to safely accommodate deep-draft vessels in line with international maritime standards.
Rear Admiral Tarek Adly Abdullah, head of the Damietta Port Authority, said the ship’s record load stands as “a new testament to the success of the port’s comprehensive development plans” carried out in recent years, including dredging of the navigation channel, increasing berth depths, upgrading marine services and enhancing operational efficiency.
He praised pilots, tug crews, marine service teams and mooring workers for their “professional performance”, noting that their coordinated efforts enabled the ship to enter and berth safely and in record time despite its large draft and heavy load.
The cargo unloading will be carried out using advanced equipment operated by SISCO Trans Logistics in coordination with the port authority and other relevant agencies, the statement added, ensuring high operational efficiency during handling operations.
The ministry said the achievement reflects the broader plan led by Transport Minister Kamel El-Wazir to modernize Egyptian ports and enhance their competitiveness as part of the state’s strategy to position Egypt as a regional hub for transport, logistics and transit trade.
The arrival of *YANG FAN* with its unprecedented tonnage underscores Damietta Port’s growing role as a key center for handling bulk and general cargo, supported by modern infrastructure, upgraded operations and qualified personnel, the ministry said.
