Japanese support advances Egypt’s Borg El Arab Airport expansion

Japanese Ambassador to Egypt, Fumio Iwai,  conducted an official visit to Borg El Arab Airport, where he reviewed the extensive enhancements made possible through the Japanese government’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) program.

The visit reaffirmed the strong partnership between Japan and Egypt, as well as Japan’s ongoing commitment to advancing sustainable infrastructure in key regions, according to a statement by the Embassy.

Borg El Arab Airport, located in Alexandria, serves as a cornerstone for regional connectivity and economic growth.

The airport’s original expansion project began in 2005 with Japanese support, leading to the completion of Passenger Terminal 1, a cargo station, and related facilities. This initial phase increased the airport’s annual capacity to 2 million passengers, significantly improving mobility in Alexandria and neighboring areas.

In response to continued growth in air travel demand, Japan launched a second phase of support in 2019. This culminated in the completion of Passenger Terminal 2 in October 2023, which has doubled the airport’s capacity, enabling it to accommodate up to 6 million passengers annually.

Borg El Arab Airport demonstrates a commitment to environmental sustainability through the integration of energy-efficient LED lighting, solar power generation, and advanced air-conditioning systems that conserve energy.

These advancements contribute to the airport’s vision of becoming a model for eco-friendly transport infrastructure in the region.

Japan’s development assistance also extends to the nearby Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST), reinforcing efforts to foster comprehensive regional development and academic collaboration.
