Egypt advances green Suez Canal: Major LNG bunkering station deal signed

In a significant step toward transforming the Suez Canal into a fully green shipping corridor by 2030, Petroleum Minister Eng. Karim Badawi and Lt. Gen. Osama Rabie, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), witnessed on Sunday the signing of a landmark memorandum of understanding to establish Egypt’s first integrated LNG liquefaction, storage, and ship-bunkering facility at Raswa Port in Port Said.

The new green infrastructure project will supply clean liquefied natural gas (LNG) as marine fuel, dramatically cutting carbon emissions from vessels transiting one of the world’s busiest waterways.

The MoU, signed by Eng. Wael Lotfy (Undersecretary for Projects at the Ministry of Petroleum) and Eng. Ahmed El-Barbery (SCA Director of Shipyards), commits the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS), other petroleum-sector companies, and the SCA to finalize all technical, executive, and financing procedures to launch construction.

Minister Badawi praised the SCA’s leadership in adopting eco-friendly investments, stressing that the facility will position the Suez Canal as a pioneer “green corridor” and serve as a magnet for further investment in LNG bunkering across Egypt.

Lt. Gen. Rabie highlighted the close cooperation with the Ministry of Petroleum, the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, and South Korean partners who conducted detailed feasibility studies. He confirmed the project is now in its final preparatory phase and will initially serve the SCA’s growing fleet of LNG-powered tugs and service vessels while offering bunkering services to international shipping lines.

The initiative aligns with International Maritime Organization (IMO) targets to slash shipping emissions and supports Egypt’s national strategy to shift toward cleaner energy, reinforcing the Suez Canal’s competitive edge in the era of sustainable maritime transport.
