Suez Canal Authority handles ship grounding incident with no injuries, minimal disruption

The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) demonstrated rapid response and professional crisis management on Friday after the RED ZED 1, a diving support vessel sailing from the Netherlands to Sudan, temporarily ran aground during its transit of the canal, the Authority announced in a statement.

Admiral Osama Rabie, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, confirmed that the incident resulted in no injuries or loss of life. "A comprehensive investigation into the grounding incident of the RED ZED 1 revealed no casualties, with only minor damage to the vessel, which is currently being assessed," he said.

The incident occurred at kilometer 45 of the waterway near the pedestrian ferry crossing at Qantara West after the vessel suffered an unexpected steering failure while transiting as part of the northbound convoy. Thanks to the prompt action of SCA pilots aboard the ship and canal traffic supervisors, a direct collision with the ferry dock was averted. An immediate evacuation of the ferry and nearby marine units was carried out to ensure public safety.

Within minutes of detecting the vessel's deviation, the SCA mobilized three tugboats—Misr El Gedida, Mosaed 4, and Suez 1—to stabilize RED ZED 1, carry out minor repairs, and escort her to a safe anchorage in the Great Bitter Lakes area for further inspection.

Admiral Rabie praised the professionalism of the Suez Canal’s crisis management system, stating, "The canal’s integrated emergency response framework enabled us to resolve the situation without disrupting navigation or ferry operations." He emphasized that vessel traffic through the canal continued unaffected, and a replacement ferry was swiftly dispatched to maintain services for local residents.

Initial surveys by SCA’s marine rescue teams confirmed the vessel’s hull remains intact, with only a small breach above the waterline requiring temporary repair before RED ZED 1 resumes its journey. Final administrative procedures and technical assessments are underway.

The Suez Canal Authority reiterated its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of maritime safety and operational efficiency through ongoing investment in training, state-of-the-art rescue equipment, and seamless coordination across its units.

RED ZED 1 measures 217 meters in length, 43 meters in width, and has a gross tonnage of 41,000 tons.

The SCA’s swift and skilled actions were widely commended as further evidence of the canal’s vital role and resilience as a global trade artery.
