Egypt’s president, Libyan military leader discuss regional stability
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met today with Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, Commander of the Libyan National Army, for high-level talks focusing on deepening ties and supporting stability in Libya. The meeting was attended by senior Egyptian and Libyan officials.
According to the official spokesperson for the Egyptian presidency, both sides reaffirmed the strong and unique relationship between Egypt and Libya. President Sisi reiterated Egypt’s steadfast support for Libya’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, emphasizing Egypt’s commitment to the withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries from Libyan soil. He also praised the central role of the Libyan National Army in safeguarding these principles.
For his part, Field Marshal Haftar expressed his appreciation for Egypt’s pivotal role—under the leadership of President Sisi—in supporting peace and stability in Libya since the onset of the crisis. He highlighted the importance of continued coordination on developments in Libya and the wider region.
The leaders also discussed ongoing regional challenges, including developments in neighboring Sudan. Both sides agreed on the need for intensified international efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution that preserves Sudan’s unity and stability, noting its direct ties to the security of both Egypt and Libya.
President Sisi reaffirmed Egypt’s backing for efforts aimed at resolving the Libyan crisis, especially initiatives promoting simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections. He underscored Egypt’s commitment to supporting the Libyan army and national institutions within the context of the historic ties between the two nations. The talks also covered maritime boundary discussions, with both parties agreeing to continue cooperation in line with international law to ensure mutual benefit.
