Egypt and Huawei expand partnership to boost smart healthcare transformation

Egypt’s Universal Health Insurance Authority (UHIA) and global technology giant Huawei have reaffirmed their strategic partnership to accelerate Egypt’s digital health transformation, following a recent high-level meeting in Cairo.

Dr. Ahmed El Sobky, Chairman of UHIA, welcomed Mr. Wind Li Junfeng, Huawei’s Senior Vice President and Global CEO of the Public Sector, along with his delegation to review the progress made under a landmark Memorandum of Understanding signed in China this April.

Central to this partnership is the advancement of Egypt’s technological infrastructure for healthcare. Dr. El Sobky emphasized the importance of the collaboration, highlighting the development of Egypt’s virtual hospital— the first of its kind in Africa and the largest in the Middle East in terms of service integration and telemedicine capabilities under the comprehensive health insurance program.

The meeting also explored new avenues of cooperation, including the creation of a National Center for Health Data Science and Artificial Intelligence in Ismailia. This center is envisioned as a national hub of innovation and expertise for developing advanced digital health solutions. Currently, UHIA manages over 6 million electronic health records and has archived half a billion AI-augmented digital radiology images—demonstrating Egypt’s remarkable progress in digital healthcare.

Dr. El Sobky praised the partnership with Huawei, noting that it extends beyond digital health to include scientific research and green transformation initiatives. Through intelligent, eco-friendly digital systems and smart resource management applications, the partnership aims to promote both environmental and economic sustainability in Egypt’s health system.

Mr. Wind Li Junfeng, Huawei’s Senior Vice President, expressed pride in the ongoing collaboration with UHIA, describing it as a model for intelligent healthcare in the region. He affirmed Huawei’s commitment to supporting Egypt’s digital transformation journey by deploying the latest global technologies and expertise.

A key highlight of the partnership is the plan to implement Egypt's first integrated smart medical cities, leveraging artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things. This pioneering project is set to revolutionize the management and operation of medical facilities across the country, further cementing Egypt’s leadership in smart healthcare on both a regional and international scale.
