Egypt FM discusses US‑Iran talks with Saudi, Iranian counterparts

Egypt’s foreign minister held separate phone calls with his Saudi and Iranian counterparts to discuss the state of US‑Iran negotiations and ongoing efforts to ease regional tensions, the foreign ministry said on Saturday.

In a call on May 23, Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan exchanged views on the latest developments surrounding indirect US‑Iran talks and wider regional dynamics, the ministry said. Both ministers stressed the need to calm rising tensions and avoid what they described as “uncalculated escalation” that could threaten the security and stability of the Middle East.

The two sides emphasised the importance of intensified diplomatic efforts and said dialogue and negotiations remained the only viable path to resolving outstanding issues and safeguarding regional stability.

Separately, Abdelatty spoke late on May 22 with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to review the status of the US‑Iran negotiation track and ongoing regional developments. According to the statement, Araghchi briefed Abdelatty on the latest updates conveyed through mediators and efforts to reach workable understandings between Washington and Tehran.

Abdelatty underscored the importance of maintaining diplomatic engagement and called for meaningful progress that could help reduce regional tensions and prevent a further expansion of conflict, the ministry added.
