Chinese Embassy’s Chargé d’Affaires highlights historic commemoration, strengthened China-Egypt partnership

Chargé d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy, Zhang Tao, delivered a comprehensive address at an event organized by the Chinese Embassy underscoring two significant recent events in China: the 80th anniversary commemoration of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, and the 2025 Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Tianjin.

These events, attended by Egyptian representatives, including Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Lieutenant General Kamel El-Wazir on behalf of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, reflect the deepening ties between China and Egypt and their shared commitment to global peace and development.

Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of Victory in World War II

On September 3, Beijing hosted a grand ceremony in Tiananmen Square to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. President Xi Jinping delivered a keynote address and reviewed a military parade, attended by Lieutenant General Kamel El-Wazir, Egypt’s Deputy Prime Minister and special envoy of President El-Sisi, alongside 61 leaders and representatives from governments and international organizations.

Zhang emphasized the significance of this commemoration, noting that China’s resistance against Japanese aggression was a critical part of the global fight against fascism. The Chinese people’s sacrifices, with 35 million military and civilian casualties, played a pivotal role in the Eastern theater of World War II, supporting Allied efforts and contributing to the preservation of human civilization and global peace. The victory marked a turning point for China, transitioning from historical challenges to its modern rejuvenation, while inspiring anti-colonial and liberation movements worldwide, including in Egypt.

The commemoration also reaffirmed the post-war international order centered on the United Nations, with Taiwan’s return to China as a key outcome. Zhang highlighted the historical and legal basis of China’s sovereignty over Taiwan, as affirmed by documents like the Cairo Declaration—signed at Egypt’s Mena House—and the Potsdam Declaration, as well as UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 of 1971. He expressed gratitude for Egypt’s steadfast support for China’s position on Taiwan and underscored China’s resolve for eventual reunification.

Advancing global governance at the SCO summit

The 2025 SCO Summit in Tianjin, described as the most significant in the organization’s history, was another focal point of Zhang’s address. Chaired by President Xi Jinping, the summit saw participation from 23 state leaders, including Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, and representatives from 10 international organizations. President Xi’s keynote address outlined five key principles for global cooperation: seeking common ground while reserving differences, pursuing mutual benefits, embracing openness and inclusivity, upholding justice and fairness, and prioritizing pragmatism and efficiency. These principles, rooted in the “Shanghai Spirit,” were widely endorsed by attendees.

The summit adopted the “SCO Development Strategy for the Next Decade” and issued the Tianjin Declaration, which expressed concern over the escalating Israeli-Palestinian conflict, calling for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire, humanitarian aid to Gaza, and a just resolution to the Palestinian issue as the path to peace in the Middle East. The summit’s success is expected to usher the SCO into a new phase of high-quality development, marked by greater unity and effectiveness.

President Xi’s Global Governance Initiative, a highlight of the summit, addresses deficiencies in global representation, influence, and effectiveness, particularly for the Global South. The initiative, based on principles of sovereign equality, international law, multilateralism, people-centered approaches, and pragmatism, aims to reform global governance without replacing the existing international system. It aligns with China’s other global initiatives—on development, security, and civilization—to foster stability in a turbulent world.

Strengthening China-Egypt strategic partnership

Zhang highlighted the robust state of China-Egypt relations, which are at their peak under the strategic guidance of Presidents Xi Jinping and Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. Egypt, a member of the SCO family, was represented by Prime Minister Madbouly at the Tianjin Summit, where he held warm discussions with President Xi and other senior Chinese officials. These talks reinforced mutual trust, support for core interests, and alignment between China’s Belt and Road Initiative and Egypt’s Vision 2030.

Madbouly conveyed President El-Sisi’s greetings and reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to the One-China principle, expressing eagerness to deepen cooperation in trade, new energy, electric vehicles, finance, and seawater desalination. Egypt welcomes increased Chinese investment and supports China’s global initiatives to protect the interests of developing nations.

The recent exchange of high-level visits, including Chinese Premier Li Qiang’s trip to Egypt in July and Madbouly’s visit to China, underscores the strategic and dynamic nature of bilateral ties. Cooperation in renewable energy, finance, and joint archaeological research on submerged artifacts is advancing steadily. Upcoming initiatives, such as the first China-Egypt Investment Forum in late October, led by Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce Ling Ji, will further translate high-level agreements into tangible benefits for both nations.

Looking ahead

Zhang concluded by reaffirming China’s commitment to working with Egypt to implement the outcomes of the SCO Summit and Madbouly’s visit, advancing the vision of a China-Egypt community with a shared future. Both nations, as key members of the Global South, are dedicated to upholding the outcomes of World War II, opposing unilateralism, and promoting a fairer international order. Through deepened cooperation, China and Egypt aim to contribute to global peace, stability, and prosperity, writing a new chapter in their enduring friendship.
