Egypt rolls out provincial SDG monitoring platform
In a forward-looking move to advance sustainable and inclusive development, Egypt’s Ministry of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation has launched an interactive digital platform to monitor the progress of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across each of the country’s provinces.
The new Provincial SDG Data Platform offers comprehensive, updated insights into the sustainable development status of all 27 Egyptian governorates. The tool enables policymakers, researchers, and citizens to easily access interactive maps and detailed indicators that reflect progress on both global and local development objectives.
Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, Egypt’s Minister of Planning and Economic Development, described the platform as an important extension of the government’s efforts to promote data-driven and transparent decision making. “This platform enables us to clearly track progress in every governorate, identify development challenges with precision, and work toward fair and balanced growth that aligns with Egypt’s Vision 2030," she said.
The platform builds upon previous SDG localization reports, conducted in collaboration with international partners such as the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The initiative utilizes official data from all national institutions, including the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics, to deliver credible and reliable insights.
Importantly, the new platform follows international evaluation standards, notably the frameworks set by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), providing objective assessments of each governorate's progress.
Key features of the platform include:
- Regularly updated information to support responsive policy decisions
- Interactive maps for easily tracking SDG progress in individual provinces
- In-depth performance analysis measuring each governorate’s distance from its 2030 targets, required annual rates of change, and rankings among all provinces
- Guidance for targeted investment, ensuring public funds respond to the real needs of each community
Dr. Al-Mashat emphasized the essential role of governorates in achieving sustainable development nationwide. She noted, “With accurate, up-to-date data, we can allocate resources more effectively and address the distinct needs of each province, enhancing the impact and efficiency of our development plans.”
With the introduction of this digital tool, Egypt is taking another step forward toward enhancing transparency, strengthening local development, and collaborating more closely with international partners to meet the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
