Egypt and Japan strengthen Suez Canal cooperation amid global trade challenges

Ismailia, Egypt — In a meeting underscoring the enduring friendship and strategic partnership between Egypt and Japan, Admiral Osama Rabie, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, welcomed Fumio Iwai, Japan’s Ambassador to Cairo, for discussions on deepening cooperation in training and marketing. The high-level talks took place at the Suez Canal Authority’s headquarters in Ismailia.

The meeting brought together senior representatives from both sides, including leaders from the Japanese embassy, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and prominent officials from the Suez Canal Authority.

Admiral Rabie expressed heartfelt appreciation for the robust partnership between Egypt and Japan. He highlighted the vital role of the Suez Canal as a cornerstone in supporting strategic and economic ties between the two countries, emphasizing it as a lifeline for global trade, especially through current regional uncertainties.

“The Suez Canal has never ceased providing its essential navigation services—even amid unprecedented regional challenges in the Red Sea and Bab Al-Mandab,” Rabie said. “We continue to adapt and offer a wide range of services in both normal and emergency situations.”

He further lauded the constructive collaboration with various Japanese institutions, particularly the long-standing relationships with the Japanese Shipowners’ Association and JICA, calling their cooperation in training and marketing “invaluable to the Suez Canal’s ongoing modernization and global relevance.”

Ambassador Fumio Iwai, in turn, commended the dedication of the Suez Canal Authority to maintaining the smooth flow of east-west trade despite global disruptions. “We deeply appreciate your continued efforts in sustaining world trade under challenging circumstances, and look forward to greater stability in the region for the benefit of global supply chains,” he said.

Highlighting recent advances in cooperation, Ambassador Iwai announced a new Japanese government grant to support the Suez Canal Authority’s rescue fleet with a state-of-the-art Diving Support Vessel (DSV). The final agreement is set to be signed at the upcoming Tokyo International Conference on African Development this August.

As global trade faces ongoing challenges, Egypt and Japan’s strengthened collaboration stands as a beacon of international partnership and shared commitment to keeping global supply lines open.
