Alexandria Film Festival to honor legendary Egyptian-Armenian child star Fayrouz

The Alexandria Mediterranean Countries Film Festival has announced that it will pay tribute to the beloved Egyptian-Armenian child actress Fayrouz at its 41st edition, set to take place from October 2 to 6, 2025. The festival’s president and noted critic Amir Abaza shared that the late star’s memory will be celebrated for her outstanding contributions to Arab cinema.

Born Perouz Artin Kalfaian in 1943, Fayrouz was discovered by composer Elias Maudab during a royal event attended by King Farouk of Egypt. She was introduced to legendary filmmaker Anwar Wagdi, who gave her the stage name "Fayrouz" and cast her in her first film, "Yasmin," in 1950.

Known as "the Egyptian Shirley Temple," Fayrouz captivated audiences with her joyful spirit and charm in a string of beloved films such as "Fayrouz Hanem" (1951) and "Dahab" (1953). Her lively collaborations with iconic comedian Ismail Yassin, including "Ismail Yassin Tarzan," still resonate with viewers today. Alongside her father, she co-founded a production company, creating celebrated works like "Al-Herman" and "Birds of Paradise."

Although Fayrouz retired at a young age, her cinematic legacy endures—and she has been the recipient of numerous honors, including a tribute at the Cairo International Film Festival in 2001. Her work continues to inspire generations and holds a special place in the history of Egyptian and Arab film.

The upcoming ceremony in Alexandria is part of the festival's longstanding tradition of honoring pioneering artists whose unforgettable contributions have enriched the world of cinema.
