Egypt welcomes Australia’s decision to recognize the State of Palestine

The Government of Egypt has warmly welcomed the recent announcement by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese that Australia intends to officially recognize the State of Palestine during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025.

In a statement released by Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Cairo described the decision as a historic step forward that supports the rights of the Palestinian people and their aspiration for self-determination, envisioning an independent, contiguous Palestinian state based on the 4 June 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The Egyptian government emphasized that Australia’s decision, along with similar moves by other countries in recent months, represents a pivotal advance towards achieving just, comprehensive, and lasting peace in the Middle East. Egypt hailed the increasing international support for the Palestinian cause and underscored the global community’s rejection of “Israeli practices in the occupied Palestinian territories,” including military expansion and the humanitarian impact on Gaza.

Egypt commended the growing international momentum towards Palestinian statehood and highlighted the urgency for all nations that have not yet recognized Palestine to take this step in the name of justice and humanity.

The statement reiterated Egypt’s continued call for the international community to redouble its efforts to end the longstanding Israeli occupation and to implement the two-state solution, which would end decades of suffering for the Palestinian people and help bring security and stability to all peoples across the region.
