Egypt signs 6 agreements with EBRD to boost investment
Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly witnessed on Monday evening the signing of six memorandums of understanding (MoUs) and agreements between several Egyptian government entities and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) at the government headquarters in the New Administrative Capital.
The deals aim to strengthen development cooperation and support national efforts in investment promotion, renewable energy integration, private-sector participation, and sustainable development.
Prime Minister Madbouly highlighted the importance of the agreements in advancing Egypt’s economic development goals, enhancing the role of the private sector, upgrading energy infrastructure, attracting foreign investment, and supporting the country’s sustainability targets.
Key agreements signed include:
- Electricity Transmission Network Reinforcement Project
- A financing agreement worth €165 million, plus an investment grant of €35 million and a €2 million technical cooperation grant.
- Signed by Minister of International Cooperation Rania Al-Mashat and EBRD Regional Director for the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean Mark Davis.
- The project will fund the construction and upgrading of a 500 kV substation in Cairo (Phase I) and a 200-km, 500 kV high-voltage transmission line from the Gulf of Suez region (Phase II) to integrate renewable energy into the national grid.
- A separate project agreement was signed by Chairperson of the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company Eng. Mona Rizk and Mark Davis, in the presence of Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat.
- Investment Promotion Cooperation
- An MoU to establish a framework for joint investment promotion and awareness campaigns to attract more foreign direct investment to Egypt.
- Signed by CEO of the General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI) Hossam Heiba and Mark Davis.
- Enhancing Private-Sector Role in Sustainable Development
- An MoU to expand private-sector access to the national “Hafiz” platform for financial and technical support, with a focus on small and medium enterprises.
- Signed by Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation Rania Al-Mashat and Mark Davis.
- The agreement will link Egyptian companies with international development partners and support national and international promotional roadshows to boost competitiveness and global market access.
The new partnerships underline the growing cooperation between Egypt and the EBRD, with a particular emphasis on green energy transition and private-sector-led growth as the country targets greater integration of renewable sources and higher foreign investment inflows.
