Egypt, China sign deal to boost phosphate mining
Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, has witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Egyptian Mineral Resources Authority and China’s Asia Potash Corporation.
The agreement aims to strengthen cooperation on the exploration and evaluation of Egypt’s phosphate reserves, and to increase the added value generated from this vital resource. Plans include scientific research, enrichment and processing of phosphate ore, and the potential development of a modern phosphate fertilizer plant, all in line with Egyptian regulations.
Minister Badawi highlighted that this collaboration forms part of Egypt’s broader mining sector development strategy, which seeks to increase the sector’s GDP contribution from less than 1% to between 5% and 6%. He underscored the importance of swift action and regular follow-up to ensure progress according to schedule.
The signing marks a promising step towards attracting substantial foreign investment, advancing industrial growth, and expanding Egypt’s international partnerships in the mining sector.
