Egypt and Nigeria deepen strategic partnership during high-level talks in Abuja
Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Migration, Dr. Badr Abdelatty, met with Nigeria’s Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar for bilateral talks in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, to reinforce the strong and growing partnership between the two key African nations.
According to a statement from the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Migration, both ministers emphasized the importance of building on their longstanding historical ties and mutual strategic interests. The meeting was marked by a shared commitment to support peace, stability, and development throughout Africa, especially following the successful third round of political consultations held in Cairo in January.
During the talks, Minister Abdelatty commended the progress made in Egypt-Nigeria relations and highlighted the need for even closer cooperation in political, economic, and developmental fields. The ministers discussed practical ways to enhance trade and investment—particularly in sectors such as agriculture, pharmaceuticals, energy, mining, construction, and information technology. Minister Abdelatty was joined by a high-level Egyptian business delegation and representatives from key Egyptian industries, showing Egypt’s dedication to expanding its economic ties with Nigeria.
The meeting also included Dr. Khaled El-Anani, Egypt’s candidate for the post of UNESCO Director-General. Minister Abdelatty expressed gratitude for Nigeria’s strong support for Dr. El-Anani’s candidacy, noting the unified African backing demonstrated during recent African Union Executive Council meetings.
Addressing security challenges, Minister Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to sharing its expertise in combating terrorism and extremism, including organizing specialized field training for Nigerian authorities and supporting efforts to promote tolerance, pluralism, and peaceful coexistence. He also praised the contributions of the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution and the influential role of Al-Azhar in countering extremist ideology in Nigeria.
In terms of capacity building, Egypt pledged to continue supporting Nigeria’s institutions through the Egyptian Agency for Partnership for Development. Over 570 Nigerian professionals have so far benefited from Egyptian training programs across various fields, reflecting a deep investment in Nigeria’s future.
The discussions also covered important regional issues, such as developments in the Sahel, the growing threat of terrorism, and current situations in the Horn of Africa, Somalia, Sudan, and Libya. Both ministers stressed the importance of African unity and closer coordination within regional and continental bodies like the African Union, aiming for collective solutions to Africa’s challenges.
Nigerian Foreign Minister Tuggar praised Egypt’s proactive leadership in Africa, especially in the areas of post-conflict reconstruction, sustainable development, and regional integration. He also expressed Nigeria’s interest in learning from Egypt’s experiences in infrastructure, technical education, healthcare, and modern agriculture.
The talks concluded with a renewed commitment to intensifying cooperation between Egypt and Nigeria at both regional and international levels, continuing mutual support for each nation’s candidacies in global organizations, and further strengthening the African Union’s efforts to deliver peace and sustainable development for all Africans.
