Egypt and EU collaborate on peace, investment, and regional security

Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Badr Abdel Aty, met with Ms. Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, for political consultations in Cairo. Their discussions focused on strengthening the deep partnership between Egypt and the European Union and addressing pressing regional and international developments.

According to the Ministry’s spokesperson, Ambassador Tamim Khallaf, Minister Abdel Aty warmly welcomed the ongoing dialogue and close cooperation with the EU. He commended the remarkable growth in Egyptian-European relations, expressing hope to continue advancing cooperation through the roadmap established at last October’s Egypt-EU summit in Brussels. Both sides are eager to fully implement the six pillars of their strategic partnership and look forward to deepening ties ahead of the next summit in 2027.

The talks highlighted the importance of expanding the Egypt-EU Investment Platform, launched in June 2025, to benefit more sectors—especially those that directly impact citizens’ daily lives, such as industry, agriculture, and support for small and medium enterprises. Minister Abdel Aty underlined the need to remove obstacles facing Egyptian exports to European markets.

Migration, skills training, security, and combating terrorism were all key points of shared concern. Minister Abdel Aty welcomed stepping up cooperation on orderly migration and professional training programs. He also expressed interest in convening an Egypt-EU security dialogue and furthering coordination to make Egypt a regional hub for humanitarian relief in crisis zones.

Regional peace and stability topped the agenda. On Gaza, Minister Abdel Aty highlighted the urgent need for unimpeded humanitarian and medical aid, especially during the harsh winter months. He emphasized the significance of establishing a Palestinian technocratic government to oversee daily affairs in Gaza, and supported deploying an international stabilization force to monitor ceasefires and facilitate reconstruction. Egypt also welcomed European support in training Palestinian police.

Turning to Sudan, the Minister briefed his European counterpart on Egypt’s mediation efforts, including seeking humanitarian ceasefires and supporting Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity. He stressed the vital need for safe passages for aid and offered strong condemnation of violence against civilians.

Minister Abdel Aty voiced Egypt’s strong rejection of Israel’s recent unilateral recognition of “Somaliland.” He called it a violation of Somali sovereignty and a threat to regional stability, urging unified international support for Somalia and upholding the Red Sea’s security as a collective regional responsibility.

Egypt reaffirmed its support for Yemen’s unity, sovereignty, and the need for inclusive political solutions to achieve stability and development. Likewise, the Minister reiterated Egypt’s unwavering stance in preserving Lebanon’s sovereignty and supporting a comprehensive political resolution in Syria.

On water security, Egypt underscored the need for fair and cooperative approaches to managing the Nile’s resources, opposed unilateral actions in the region, and asserted its right to protect its water lifeline under international law.

Finally, Minister Abdel Aty called for a peaceful and diplomatic resolution to the Ukraine crisis to ensure stability in the region and beyond.

The meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment between Egypt and the European Union to build bridges of understanding, promote peace, and support prosperity for their peoples and the wider region.
