Truck driver hailed as hero after sacrificing life to save Egyptian city from disaster
The city of 10th of Ramadan, located in Egypt’s Sharkia Governorate, narrowly avoided a major catastrophe after a fuel truck driver risked—and ultimately lost—his life to prevent a devastating explosion at a local gas station.
Khaled Mohamed Shawqi, a fuel truck driver, made the ultimate sacrifice today when fire broke out at a fuel station in the heart of the city. The incident began when the tanker of a fuel truck explosively ignited, apparently due to high temperatures, threatening not only the gas station but also nearby residential areas.
In a moment of grave danger, witnesses say Shawqi rushed to his truck, which was engulfed in flames, and drove it swiftly out of the station’s grounds. His courageous action averted what could have been a far greater disaster: had the fire reached the station’s main fuel tanks or nearby homes, authorities say the consequences could have been catastrophic.
Videos and photos captured by bystanders show the driver’s dramatic act, and tributes have poured in from local residents hailing him as a hero. Unfortunately, Shawqi suffered severe injuries during his efforts. He was taken first to a local hospital, then transferred to a specialized burns hospital in Cairo, but succumbed to his injuries.
The blaze also injured three others. Local emergency services responded quickly with four fire engines and managed to bring the fire under control before it could spread further. An official investigation has been opened into the incident.
The name of Shawqi will be remembered in 10th of Ramadan City as a symbol of extraordinary courage and selflessness—a reminder of the everyday heroes who risk their lives to keep others safe.
