Egypt’s foreign minister, IAEA chief discuss US–Iran negotiations

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aaty held a phone call with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi to discuss regional developments, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Saturday.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Tamim Khallaf said the two officials reviewed the outcome of the 11th Review Conference of the Nuclear Non‑Proliferation Treaty (NPT), held in New York from April 27 to May 22. Abdel Aaty expressed disappointment that the conference failed to reach consensus on a final document, the spokesman said.

According to the statement, Abdel Aaty stressed that outcomes of previous review conferences remain valid, particularly the 1995 resolution on establishing a Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction. He underlined what he described as the central importance of the NPT as the cornerstone of the global disarmament and non‑proliferation regime, and called for universal adherence to the treaty, especially in the Middle East.

Khallaf added that the call also touched on the latest developments in negotiations between the United States and Iran. Abdel Aaty emphasized the need to intensify diplomatic efforts and support initiatives aimed at reaching mutually acceptable understandings between Washington and Tehran. He said such efforts are essential to reducing tensions and strengthening regional and international security and stability.
