Egyptian doctors achieve breakthrough in eye care with complex corneal transplant

Egypt’s healthcare sector has celebrated another step forward in advanced medical care, as a team at Ismailia Medical Complex has successfully performed a complex corneal transplant for a 62-year-old woman, all under the country’s Universal Health Insurance system.

The General Authority for Healthcare announced the successful operation, which included both the challenging corneal transplant and the delicate separation of adhesions, as a testament to Egypt’s ongoing commitment to upgrading its healthcare services and providing state-of-the-art medical care to its citizens.

Dr. Ahmed El-Sobky, Chairman of the General Authority for Healthcare, stated that this medical achievement is a clear reflection of the advances in quality of care within the Authority. He emphasized that such precision interventions are now routinely performed by skilled Egyptian hands, utilizing the latest medical technologies in line with strict international standards.

“This achievement underlines the full readiness of our hospitals to handle such sophisticated cases,” Dr. El-Sobky explained, “and it demonstrates our promise to expand specialized services and strengthen public trust in the Universal Health Insurance system, which aims to deliver safe, comprehensive healthcare to all segments of society.”

Remarkably, the patient’s out-of-pocket contribution for the entire procedure was just 450 Egyptian Pounds (about $9), highlighting the vision behind the Universal Health Insurance system: to make top-quality medical services accessible and affordable for everyone, especially those most in need.

This successful corneal transplant is the second of its kind conducted at the Ismailia Medical Complex, indicating the hospital’s robust preparedness to carry out more similar advanced operations in the future. The operation was conducted by a distinguished multidisciplinary team, led by Professor Osama Mohy El-Din Al-Nahrawy, Consultant in Ophthalmology, and supported by Dr. Mona Mohamed Omar, Head of Ophthalmology, Dr. Sara Mohamed Tarek, and expert anesthesiologists and nursing staff.

The procedure was performed under the close supervision of senior medical administrators, ensuring the highest standards of care throughout.

The Authority concluded its statement by reaffirming its drive toward comprehensive, sustainable, and equitable health coverage for all Egyptians. This ongoing investment in infrastructure, staff development, and medical technology aims not only to meet but to surpass the evolving needs of patients, fully aligning with Egypt’s Vision 2030 for the healthcare sector.
