Building collapse in Cairo: Rescue operations ongoing, survivors pulled from rubble

CAIRO – Rescue workers in Egypt’s capital are continuing search-and-rescue operations following the collapse of two residential buildings in the Hadayek Al-Qubba district late Monday. Fourteen survivors have been rescued, while at least four people have lost their lives, according to official sources.

Cairo Governor Dr. Ibrahim Saber confirmed that an engineering committee has been formed to inspect nearby buildings for potential structural damage, as many of the properties in the area are old. "[We] are thoroughly examining the impact of the accident on neighboring buildings," Dr. Saber stated during a visit to the site.

Emergency crews, including the Civil Protection Forces, Red Crescent, and local authorities, remain at the scene. They are working with heavy machinery and thermal imaging devices to ensure that no one remains trapped under the debris.

In a particularly poignant moment captured on video, a young girl was rescued after spending seven hours beneath the rubble. Several other survivors, including children and elderly residents, were transported to local hospitals suffering from smoke inhalation and minor injuries.

The Egyptian Red Crescent is providing medical care on-site and assisting in rescue efforts. The cause of the collapse is under investigation, but officials note the age and condition of local buildings as a contributing factor.

Authorities have pledged to support the affected families and undertake reviews of building safety regulations citywide.
