EU eases entry for Egyptian potato exports
In a significant boost for Egypt’s agricultural sector, the European Union has approved new regulations that will facilitate the export of Egyptian potatoes to EU markets. The announcement was made by Egypt’s Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, which welcomed the legislation as an important step to strengthen the country’s agricultural exports.
The new EU regulation (No. 1289/2025) will make it easier for Egyptian table potatoes—specifically from areas certified free of brown rot disease—to enter the European market. Key changes include higher weight allowances for shipments and fewer sample checks, streamlining export procedures and reducing costs for Egyptian farmers and exporters.
Egypt’s plant quarantine authority praised the achievement, highlighting the close cooperation between Egyptian and European officials in shaping the new rules. Dr. Mohamed El-Mansi, head of Egypt’s central plant quarantine department, expressed gratitude to everyone involved, emphasizing that the reforms will help Egyptian potatoes meet European plant health standards and bolster Egypt’s reputation as a leading agricultural exporter.
Egypt’s potato exports have already exceeded 1.3 million tonnes for the first time, and ongoing efforts continue to open new international markets for Egyptian produce.
