AUC welcomes First Lady of Singapore for landmark campus visit

The American University in Cairo (AUC) was honored to host Mrs. Jane Ittogi Shanmugaratnam, First Lady of Singapore, for a special visit to its New Cairo Campus. Mrs. Ittogi was accompanied by a distinguished delegation from Singapore and received a warm welcome from AUC leadership, including Provost Ehab Abdel-Rahman; University Counselor Hala El Said; and Dr. Hania Sholkamy from the Social Research Center.

During her visit, Mrs. Ittogi and her delegation explored the University’s Rare Books and Special Collections Library, where they viewed “Mining the Library,” an exhibition showcasing the creative work of AUC’s arts students. The group also toured the Creswell Room, home to a remarkable collection of Arabic manuscripts, rare books, and historical documents that highlight Egypt’s rich cultural heritage.

A highlight of the visit included an engaging conversation with 15 AUC students, among them two Singaporean students, discussing education, cross-cultural dialogue, and campus life. This exchange embodied AUC’s enduring dedication to fostering understanding and developing leaders with a global perspective.

“AUC is honored to welcome Mrs. Ittogi and the Singaporean delegation,” said Provost Abdel-Rahman. “This visit is a powerful testament to our commitment to connecting cultures and advancing knowledge that transcends borders.”
