Egypt, Azerbaijan discuss expanded development partnership
Egypt’s Planning and Economic Development Minister Ahmed Rustum held wide‑ranging talks with Azerbaijan’s ambassador in Cairo, Elkhan Toghukhov, to explore a new phase of economic cooperation and stronger development ties, the ministry said in a statement on Sunday.
Rustum expressed Egypt’s appreciation for what he described as the “strategic and historic partnership” between the two countries, saying Cairo is keen to work with Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Economy to shape “a renewed economic relationship” that supports development efforts in both states. He said the economic potential of Egypt and Azerbaijan could enable “fresh developmental momentum,” noting that Egypt continues to push private‑sector empowerment despite regional challenges.
The minister outlined Egypt’s experience in structural reform, macroeconomic stability and the use of digital tools to monitor progress toward sustainable development goals.
Rustum also praised the outcomes of previous joint committee meetings between the two countries, saying they had opened new avenues for cooperation and that current conditions are favorable for expanding economic ties.
Ambassador Toghukhov said Azerbaijan attaches great value to its long‑standing relationship with Egypt and highlighted the positive results of President Abdel Fattah al‑Sisi’s visit to Baku and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s visit to Cairo.
He pointed to the launch of direct flights between Baku and Cairo earlier this year, saying they would support business communities and facilitate trade.
The ambassador added that Azerbaijan will host next week’s annual meetings of the Islamic Development Bank Group and is preparing to host the upcoming Organisation of Islamic Cooperation summit, where major joint development and regional projects are expected to be discussed and approved. He said Baku is eager to benefit from Egypt’s experience in smart‑city development and advanced infrastructure for the green economy.
