Egypt’s tourism ministry forms committee to prepare for 2027 total solar eclipse
Egypt’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy has ordered the formation of a committee, chaired by himself, to prepare for the total solar eclipse expected to be visible in Luxor on August 2, 2027, the ministry said Saturday.
The ministry said the committee will be responsible for planning and organizing events related to the rare astronomical phenomenon, with the aim of ensuring that tourists can observe the eclipse safely and smoothly.
It will also study measures needed to accommodate the expected influx of visitors wishing to witness the event, including managing crowd flow and reducing congestion in key viewing areas.
The committee includes the CEO of the Egyptian Tourism Authority, the secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, the assistant minister for tourism companies, the chairman of the Egyptian Tourism Federation, the head of the Central Administration for Hotel and Tourism Establishments, and the minister’s advisers for aviation, follow-up and digital transformation.
Representatives from the Chambers of Travel Agencies and Hotel Establishments, as well as officials from the ministries of finance – including the Customs Authority – interior, and civil aviation will also take part.
Egypt’s geographic position will allow it one of the longest viewing durations of the eclipse, potentially reaching around six minutes, the ministry said, adding that this offers a significant opportunity to boost tourism and position the country as a leading global destination for eclipse observation.
