Egypt and India discuss health insurance and digital transformation cooperation

Ms. Mai Farid, Executive Director of Egypt’s General Authority for Comprehensive Health Insurance, met with Mr. Suresh K. Reddy, Ambassador of India to Egypt, to explore avenues for bilateral cooperation in digital and technological transformation of the health insurance system, public-private sector integration, and leveraging India’s experience with the Ayushman Bharat health insurance program.

The meeting focused on joint efforts to develop digital platforms, performance indicators, and innovative solutions for the comprehensive health insurance system. Discussions also covered coordination between Egypt’s General Authority for Comprehensive Health Insurance and its Indian counterparts to explore technical and technological collaboration.

Ms. Farid presented the components of Egypt’s comprehensive health insurance system, highlighting India’s Ayushman Bharat program as a successful, integrated model for expanding health coverage through advanced digital mechanisms. She emphasized Egypt’s interest in learning from this model to enhance resource management efficiency, reduce financial leakages, and improve targeting of vulnerable populations.

She further explained that the Authority is currently developing an integrated digital platform to manage beneficiary records, insurance claims, and service pricing, utilizing big data analytics to support decision-making and optimize public spending. Ms. Farid underscored the importance of collaborating with India through expertise exchange and technical partnerships.

Additionally, she highlighted the Authority’s focus on expanding integration between public and private sectors in healthcare delivery, including contracts with private insurance companies. She noted the potential to adopt India’s smart integration of national ID data, mobile numbers, and bank accounts to ensure accurate beneficiary verification and efficient, transparent support delivery.

Ambassador Reddy stated that India operates the world’s largest government-backed health insurance system, relying on an advanced digital infrastructure and a decentralized management system linking databases, funding, and national IDs. He described Egypt as a key partner in Africa and expressed India’s interest in a long-term digital partnership. He welcomed cooperation with Egypt’s General Authority for Comprehensive Health Insurance, proposing an official Egyptian delegation visit to New Delhi and select Indian states to study claims management systems, private hospital integration, quality control mechanisms, and measures to prevent fraud in healthcare services.

The ambassador noted that Egypt’s market is highly promising and attractive for Indian companies specializing in health technology and digital transformation. He highlighted vast potential for collaboration in developing digital platforms and innovative solutions for the health insurance system, adding that coordination with India’s relevant authorities will be arranged to explore technical and technological cooperation with Egypt.
