Egypt, ACSAD launch projects to boost food security

In a significant step towards fostering food security and sustainable development, Egypt’s Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation has signed a comprehensive cooperation protocol with the Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones and Dry Lands (ACSAD). The agreement paves the way for a series of joint projects designed to tackle climate challenges and enhance agricultural productivity through innovative technologies.

The cooperation protocol was signed at a special ceremony attended by Minister of Agriculture Alaa Farouk, Dr. Adel Abdel Azim (Head of the Agricultural Research Center), and Dr. Nasr Eldin El-Obeid (ACSAD Director General), along with senior officials from both institutions.

Minister Farouk emphasized the importance of this partnership, underscoring its pivotal role in Egypt’s efforts to build climate resilience within the agricultural sector. “These projects will directly contribute to achieving food security, supporting farmers, and promoting more sustainable farming practices,” he noted. The initiatives are aligned with Egypt’s Vision 2030 for sustainable development and reflect both parties’ commitment to climate-smart agriculture.

Dr. El-Obeid expressed his confidence in the lasting impact of the collaboration. “We are delighted to strengthen our ongoing partnership with Egypt’s Ministry of Agriculture, launching pioneering projects that will deliver tangible benefits for farmers and the wider economy. Together, we are enhancing the capacity of Egyptian agriculture to adapt and thrive, even in the face of today’s daunting challenges.”

Among the major initiatives included in the agreement are:

- Developing climate-adapted, salt-tolerant bread wheat varieties to support climate-smart agriculture.

- Improving wheat productivity under heat stress in Egypt’s southern governorates.

- Enhancing the drought and salt resistance of lentil and chickpea crops using advanced nanotechnologies.

- Breeding faba bean varieties that are resistant to local threats and well-suited to Egyptian and Arab environments.

- Boosting sustainable, smart agriculture in New Valley Governorate through the introduction of innovative crop rotations.

- Increasing productivity of local goat breeds via advanced breeding techniques, including artificial insemination and embryo transfer.

- Registering and multiplying modern ACSAD wheat seed varieties to benefit Egyptian farmers.

These targeted projects blend scientific research with practical field applications, aiming to empower Egyptian farmers, strengthen national food security, and set a model for climate resilience across the region.

As Egypt continues on its path towards sustainable development, the partnership with ACSAD stands as a heartening example of regional cooperation and forward-thinking leadership in the face of global environmental challenges.
