GEM hosts third edition of Identity Day celebration
The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) welcomed the third edition of “Identity Day,” an event that celebrates Egypt’s rich heritage and enduring cultural identity.
Organized in collaboration with Sadko Foundation, the event gathered prominent public figures, representatives of civil society organizations, NGOs, and art and heritage enthusiasts eager to engage with the museum’s vibrant community activities.
The event was attended by Dr. Ahmed Ghoneim, CEO of the Grand Egyptian Museum, Ms. Yomna El-Behar, Deputy Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Ms. Hadia Ghabour, Chairperson and Founder of Sadko Group, alongside a distinguished audience of cultural leaders and citizens passionate about preserving Egypt’s history.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Ghoneim highlighted the museum’s vital role as a beacon for cultural preservation, inspiring generations by safeguarding Egypt’s ancient legacy and sharing its timeless stories with the world. He emphasized that “Identity Day” demonstrates the museum’s commitment to nurturing a sense of belonging and pride among Egyptians while fostering creative visions for the future.
A central feature of the celebration was a panel discussion entitled “Eternal Civilization… One Comprehensive Identity with Diverse Cultures.” Moderated by Dr. Ghoneim, the conversation brought together experts including Dr. Nahla Imam, UNESCO Advisor to the Ministry of Culture on Intangible Heritage; Dr. Gihan Nabil, Director of the Museum’s Educational Center; Ms. Shahira Mehrez, a renowned cultural pioneer and heritage fashion expert; and Mr. Omar Fathy, CEO of Thrive Eatery.
Panelists explored key themes surrounding Egyptian identity, the importance of social and cultural belonging, and the crucial role of heritage in preserving the Arabic language, traditional customs, and authentic practices—even as communities adapt and grow. The discussion also addressed the need to protect and celebrate Egypt’s intangible heritage in the face of globalization and rapidly changing cultural landscapes.
Attendees expressed great pride in the Grand Egyptian Museum’s commitment to promoting cultural dialogue and sharing Egypt’s historic legacy with new generations and the world.
This "Identity Day" event is part of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities’ ongoing efforts to strengthen national identity and cultural continuity, inviting all who cherish heritage to join in the ongoing celebration of Egypt’s unique, living civilization.
