Egypt and Japan expand pioneering school partnership across Africa
In a testament to the power of international partnerships to foster meaningful change, Egypt’s Minister of Education and Technical Education, Mr. Mohamed Abdel-Latif, welcomed Ms. Sachiko Emoto, Vice President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), to Cairo today.
Their meeting highlighted the growing success of Egypt-Japan Schools and set the stage for wider collaboration across Africa.
Discussions focused on the expansion of the Egypt-Japan School project, a unique initiative blending Egyptian curricula with acclaimed Japanese educational practices—particularly the holistic “Tokkatsu” activities that build character, teamwork, and active learning among students.
Minister Abdel-Latif commended the fruitful collaboration between his ministry and JICA, emphasizing how the Egypt-Japan Schools are a shining example of successful international cooperation. “These schools do not just teach subjects," he remarked, "they nurture the values and skills every young person needs to thrive in a fast-changing world.”
For her part, Ms. Emoto praised the Egyptian government’s commitment to educational reform and affirmed JICA’s strong support for Egypt’s vision: “The partnership between JICA and Egypt is a model of what can be achieved through shared purpose and respect—and we are excited to help replicate this success across African nations.”
JICA announced plans to showcase the Egypt-Japan School experience at the upcoming Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD), scheduled for August 20-22. There, education officials will share best practices, hoping to inspire similar initiatives continent-wide.
Looking ahead, Egypt will open 15 new Egypt-Japan Schools for the 2025/2026 academic year, continuing their mission to blend discipline, group work, and active engagement into Egyptian classrooms. The program’s success has garnered international admiration, positioning it as a template for educational development across Africa.
The meeting also allowed both sides to discuss Egypt’s participation in TICAD, where the Egyptian Ministry of Education will sign several new cooperation agreements with Japan.
