Egypt and Palestine reaffirm partnership, urge international action to end Gaza war
Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Dr. Badr Abdel Aty, met Tuesday night with Hussein Al-Sheikh, Vice President of the State of Palestine and Deputy Chair of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, to discuss recent developments in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The talks, attended by Dr. Majdi Al-Khalidi, Diplomatic Advisor to the Palestinian President, highlighted the unity of both sides in calling for increased regional and international pressure on Israel to end its ongoing military campaign in Gaza. The Egyptian and Palestinian officials urged immediate acceptance of an Egypt-Qatar-mediated ceasefire proposal, based on suggestions from U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Weitecov.
Dr. Abdel Aty strongly condemned Israel’s use of hunger as a weapon in Gaza and reiterated Egypt’s absolute opposition to the displacement of Palestinians and the expansion of Israeli military operations.
Discussions also covered the situation in the West Bank, with Egypt’s foreign minister firmly rejecting Israeli settlement expansion—particularly in the contentious E1 zone—and denouncing land confiscations and acts of intimidation against Palestinians.
The meeting further addressed ongoing coordination to rally international support for wider recognition of Palestinian statehood, notably ahead of the upcoming international conference on implementing the two-state solution in New York during the UN General Assembly. Dr. Abdel Aty welcomed recent moves by several countries to recognize Palestine and underscored Egypt’s continued support for the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to establish an independent state based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
