Egypt aims for sports industry self-sufficiency through public-private alliance

Egypt’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr. Ashraf Sobhy, has met with a group of prominent Egyptian investors to explore new opportunities for public-private partnership in the sports sector.

The discussions centered around forming a national alliance to establish a company dedicated to advancing Egypt’s sports-related industries, especially the manufacturing of artificial turf and related products.

Dr. Sobhy emphasized that these collaborations are designed to help localize and expand sports manufacturing in Egypt—a move that will help the country achieve greater self-sufficiency, supply local demand, and reduce the need for foreign imports. This approach is expected to save foreign currency and provide new job opportunities for Egyptian citizens.

“We are committed to localizing many industries in the sports sector, particularly artificial turf manufacturing. By partnering with the Ministry of Military Production, we aim to support the supply of locally-made artificial turf to youth centers across the country, ensuring both global quality standards and cost-effectiveness,” Dr. Sobhy said.

The Minister highlighted that such initiatives are part of a larger vision to foster innovation, encourage private sector involvement in sports industries, and create a sustainable business environment. Egypt now boasts its own artificial turf factory and is working to expand the domestic production of sports equipment, further supporting the government’s efforts to boost employment and economic growth.

During the meeting, participants also reviewed a proposal to develop a standardized design for fencing around all youth and sports centers in Egypt. The goal is to ensure the safety and preservation of these vital facilities while keeping costs manageable.
