Egyptian Red Crescent volunteers aided wounded, families during 1973 war
Egyptian Red Crescent volunteers supported medical and relief efforts during the 1973 Arab-Israeli war, assisting wounded people and their families, the organisation said in a statement marking the anniversary of the October conflict.
Women volunteers worked in hospitals providing first aid and nursing care, and helped establish committees to trace missing people, reunite families and facilitate correspondence between prisoners of war and their relatives, the statement said.
The Red Crescent also organised blood donation campaigns through its blood bank, which opened around the time of the war, and set up shelter committees. It provided clothing and other essential aid to people affected by the conflict, the statement added.
The organisation said the volunteers’ work formed part of Egypt’s wider humanitarian response during the war.
