Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey vow closer coordination on regional crises

Foreign ministers from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey called for continued diplomatic efforts to address regional tensions and reaffirmed their support for Saudi Arabia’s security and territorial integrity, according to a joint statement issued Tuesday.

The ministers met in New York on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly to discuss regional and international developments.

They expressed “deep concern” over continuing tensions and hostilities in the region, saying dialogue and diplomacy were the only means of achieving lasting solutions. They also stressed the importance of complying with the Islamabad memorandum of understanding to secure lasting peace and stability.

The four ministers “strongly condemned” all attacks targeting Saudi Arabia, including recent attacks by Yemen’s Huthi rebels, and reaffirmed the kingdom’s right to defend itself and its people under international law and the UN Charter.

They also underscored the need to ensure the safety and freedom of maritime navigation.

The ministers reiterated their support for Yemen’s internationally recognised government and Presidential Leadership Council, backing efforts to achieve security, stability and development through an inclusive Yemeni-led political process.

On the Palestinian issue, they reaffirmed their support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and to establish an independent, sovereign, viable and geographically contiguous state along the borders that existed before the 1967 Middle East war, with east Jerusalem as its capital.

They also reiterated their support for Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, independence and territorial integrity, rejecting any parallel entities that could undermine the country’s unity. The ministers called for an end to the illicit flow of weapons, mercenaries and foreign fighters into Sudan.

The four countries agreed to maintain close coordination and consultations on regional and international developments, with the stated aim of strengthening collective security and long-term regional stability.
