Egypt strengthens pharmaceutical and health tech ties with Turkey

Dr. Ali El-Ghamrawy, President of the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA), joined a high-level Egyptian delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health and Population Prof. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar at the 11th World Medical Conference held in Ankara from November 24–26.

The visit focused on deepening technical and regulatory cooperation with leading international health authorities, with particular emphasis on Egyptian-Turkish collaboration in pharmaceuticals, medical devices, biotechnology, and advanced rehabilitation technologies.

During official visits to specialized Turkish neuro-musculoskeletal rehabilitation and research centers, Dr. El-Ghamrawy stressed that the EDA is working to upgrade Egypt’s regulatory framework for medical devices and AI-assisted rehabilitation technologies. The goal is to ensure rigorous safety and quality assessments while paving the way for localizing cutting-edge rehabilitation technologies in the Egyptian market.

He highlighted that Egyptian-Turkish bilateral partnerships in the pharmaceutical sector represent a cornerstone for building regional health security through:

  • Boosting local drug manufacturing and increasing reliance on national production
  • Exchanging regulatory expertise on registering biologics and innovative medicines
  • Strengthening pharmaceutical supply chains to guarantee sustainable availability of critical products
  • Encouraging mutual investment in biotechnology and vaccines

Dr. El-Ghamrawy described the partnership as a vital model for developing advanced pharmaceutical industries in Egypt, enhancing the competitiveness of Egyptian manufacturers regionally and globally.

On the sidelines of the conference, Dr. El-Ghamrawy held official talks with the Turkish delegation covering:

  • Regulatory integration in drug and medical device registration
  • Cooperation on Health Technology Assessment (HTA) to support pricing policies and rational consumption
  • Expanded factory inspections and oversight in both countries
  • Joint R&D programs and technology transfer
  • Collaboration in advanced prosthetics and high-tech medical supplies

Both sides agreed to continue technical visits, develop training programs for Egyptian inspectors, laboratory testing specialists, and pharmaceutical innovation evaluators.

In line with its humanitarian role, the Egyptian Drug Authority reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and quality of medicines and medical supplies destined for Palestinian brothers, while coordinating rapid clearance, testing, and facilitation of medical aid flows.

Concluding the visit, Dr. El-Ghamrawy stated that Egypt’s participation reflects the state’s determination to consolidate its leading regional role in pharmaceutical regulation, localize advanced health technologies, and build a robust drug industry capable of meeting domestic needs and those of the wider region.
