Egypt, Schlumberger strengthen partnership to boost oil, gas exploration
Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, met today with Jesus Lamas, Regional President of SLB (Schlumberger), and Sherif Bayoumi, the company’s General Manager in Egypt and the Eastern Mediterranean, to discuss ways to enhance technical partnerships, expand oil and gas exploration, and drive production as part of Egypt’s wider energy strategy.
The meeting focused on six key pillars underpinning Egypt’s petroleum sector strategy. Central objectives include intensifying exploration and development activities, boosting oil and gas output, and leveraging new technologies to support Egypt’s growing energy needs.
Minister Badawi highlighted the strategic importance of SLB’s partnership, especially in pioneering projects such as the Egypt Upstream Gateway (EUG)—a digital platform designed to attract global investors by showcasing promising exploration opportunities across a range of geological basins. Recent bidding rounds promoted by the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC), Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS), and Ganoub El Wadi Petroleum Holding Company (Ganope) through the EUG are already generating positive interest.
Discussions also emphasized the crucial role of advanced digital solutions, including artificial intelligence, in decision-making and operational efficiency across the sector.
Additional areas of cooperation discussed included the ongoing seismic survey project in the Red Sea, preparations for upcoming marketing activities for exploration blocks, and the potential for new offshore seismic surveys in the Gulf of Suez using OBN (Ocean Bottom Node) technologies. The partnership aims to bring innovation to mature field development, increase hydrocarbon recovery, and implement carbon capture and storage (CCS) initiatives.
Both sides agreed to strengthen technical collaboration, including holding specialized technical workshops to support current and future petroleum sector activities in Egypt.
This meeting underscores Egypt’s commitment to embracing cutting-edge technology, strengthening global partnerships, and unlocking new growth opportunities in its vital energy sector.
