Egypt advances lunar partnership with China

The Egyptian Space Agency (EgSA) hosted a high-level Chinese delegation on Thursday for the successful Preliminary Design Review (PDR) of Egypt’s scientific payload aboard China’s Chang’e-8 lunar lander, marking a major milestone in bilateral space cooperation.

The meetings, held at EgSA headquarters, focused on technical integration of the Egyptian payload with the Chinese mission, scheduled for launch later this decade. Discussions covered engineering designs, system compatibility, testing protocols, and operational plans to ensure seamless performance on the lunar surface.

The Egyptian technical session was led by Dr. Ayman Mahmoud, Head of Space Programs at EgSA, alongside the agency’s engineering team. The Chinese side was headed by Professor Bai Zhaoyu, Chief Designer of the Chang’e-8 mission from the China National Space Administration (CNSA).

At the conclusion of the review, both agencies signed the PDR acceptance certificate and exchanged commemorative shields, symbolizing the deepening scientific and technological partnership.

This collaboration positions Egypt as an active contributor to international lunar exploration and deep-space science, reinforcing the Egyptian Space Agency’s growing regional leadership and Egypt’s rising profile on the global space map.
