Israeli army to relocate Gaza residents south
Beginning Sunday, the Israeli military will begin supplying Gaza residents with tents and other essential items ahead of relocating them from combat zones to designated “safe” areas in the southern part of the enclave, according to military spokesperson Avichay Adraee, as reported by Reuters on Saturday.
This initiative follows Israel’s announcement of a planned new offensive intended to seize control of northern Gaza City—the enclave’s largest urban hub—a strategy that has heightened international concerns for the 2.2 million people living in the devastated territory.
Adraee stated that the supplies will be delivered through the Kerem Shalom crossing by the United Nations and other global aid organizations, following thorough inspections by officials from Israel’s defense ministry.
COGAT, the Israeli military agency overseeing aid coordination, did not immediately respond to questions regarding whether these measures are part of the latest military strategy.
Capturing Gaza City—which is home to around one million Palestinians—further complicates ceasefire negotiations aimed at ending the nearly two-year conflict. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains committed to advancing against Hamas’ remaining strongholds.
Netanyahu asserted that Israel has no option but to continue its campaign until Hamas is defeated, citing the group’s ongoing refusal to disarm.
Hamas, in response, declared it would only lay down its weapons if an independent Palestinian state is established.
Israeli forces currently control approximately 75% of Gaza.
