Venezuelan President Maduro urges global action to end violence against Palestinians
Caracas – Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has issued a strong appeal for international unity and urgent action in response to ongoing violence against the Palestinian people, during a Special Emergency Ministerial Meeting of the Hague Group on July 14.
The gathering, initiated by Colombia and South Africa, aims to coordinate a global response to what organizers describe as “atrocities” committed in the occupied Palestinian territories.
In his address, President Maduro expressed “hope and respect” for the meeting’s purpose, emphasizing its importance as a “moral and political response at a time when humanity is challenged by horror and impunity.”
He described the current situation in Gaza, Rafah, Nablus, and across Palestine as “not a conflict between equals,” but rather “a systematic plan to destroy a people, to eradicate its identity, to erase its memory”, language he said reflects “a crime against humanity.”
Maduro strongly criticized what he called the “passivity of the world” in the face of what he labeled “the ongoing genocide against Palestine.”
He stated that recent escalations since October 2023 have led to thousands of deaths, injuries, and missing persons, and traced the roots of the crisis back to 1948 and “the beginning of the Zionist occupation.”
Accusing Western powers of supporting the Israeli government with “arms, money, surveillance technologies and diplomatic protection,” Maduro described Israel under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as “the greatest threat to humanity.”
He further alleged that international bodies such as the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the International Criminal Court (ICC) have been slow or ineffective in upholding justice, which he attributed to Western influence.
Maduro called for a “Great World Summit for Peace and Against War,” proposing that the international community construct “a collective and firm solution” to end the violence, work toward nuclear disarmament of Israel, and ensure accountability under international law. He reiterated support for “a fully sovereign Palestinian State with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions.”
The Venezuelan president also praised the work of UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese, who has reported on human rights in the occupied territories, expressing solidarity with her amid criticism and threats.
Concluding his address, Maduro declared, “To defend Palestine is to defend humanity itself. To remain silent is to betray the spirit of all the peoples who have fought for their independence and dignity.” He vowed continued support for the Palestinian cause, stating, “Venezuela is and will always be by its side. Palestine will live. Palestine will win.”
The emergency Hague Group meeting brings together leaders and representatives from Colombia, South Africa, Venezuela, and other nations seeking increased global engagement on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It occurs amid ongoing tensions and calls for international humanitarian intervention.
