Iran launches missile strikes targeting US military bases in Qatar, Iraq in retaliation

Iran responded on Monday to US airstrikes on three of its nuclear facilities by launching at least ten missiles at American military bases in Qatar and Iraq.

Israeli officials told Al-Monitor that Iran fired at least ten missiles targeting US bases in Qatar, along with one missile aimed at Iraq. Qatar is home to the largest US military base in the Middle East, with more than 8,000 American personnel stationed at Al Udeid Air Base near Doha.

Reports from Agence France-Presse and Reuters indicated that explosions were heard in the Qatari capital, Doha.

According to Iran's Mehr News Agency, the missile attack on US bases in Qatar and Iraq has been designated Operation Blessings of Victory.

A senior White House official informed Al-Monitor that both the White House and the Department of Defense are aware of the situation and are closely monitoring possible threats to Al Udeid Air Base.

There were no immediate reports of casualties. This marks Iran’s second-largest direct assault on US targets, following its retaliation for the 2020 killing of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Gen. Qasem Soleimani.

The United States became involved in the Israel-Iran conflict on Sunday when President Donald Trump authorized strikes against Iran's nuclear sites at Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan. Tehran condemned the attacks as a significant escalation and pledged a forceful response.
