“People of Egypt” Program: Empowering borderland women through culture and creativity
Under the patronage of H.E. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Egypt’s Ministry of Culture hosted a vibrant cultural forum as part of the presidential initiative “Ahl Misr” (People of Egypt). This dynamic event brought together 120 young women from Egypt’s border regions—North and South Sinai, Matrouh, the New Valley, the Red Sea, Aswan, and Nubia—for an open dialogue with Dr. Ahmed Fouad Hanno, Egypt’s Minister of Culture, at the iconic Hanager Theatre in the Cairo Opera House.
The 21st Forum for Culture and Arts of Girls and Women from Border Governorates, organized by the General Authority for Cultural Palaces, showcased the power of culture in fostering unity and identity. The participants, representing Egypt’s diverse border communities, shared inspiring success stories, from mastering traditional crafts to launching small businesses. These women demonstrated how cultural programs can transform lives by equipping them with creative skills and economic opportunities.
Dr. Hanno emphasized the universal role of culture, stating, “Egyptian culture belongs to all its people. It is the truest expression of our unique identity, shaping our nation and distinguishing it globally.” He praised the participants as “partners in nation-building,” highlighting their contributions to preserving Egypt’s heritage while driving innovation.
The “People of Egypt” initiative transcends borders, offering a model for cultural integration and empowerment that resonates worldwide. Through workshops, cultural tours, and interactive sessions, the program connects young women from remote regions with Egypt’s cultural institutions, fostering dialogue and collaboration.
These activities not only preserve Egypt’s rich heritage but also position it as a beacon of cultural influence in the Arab world and beyond.
The forum’s diverse activities—ranging from art and craft workshops to visits to Egypt’s historical landmarks—equip participants with practical skills and cultural knowledge. These efforts align with global goals of sustainable development, women’s empowerment, and cultural preservation, making the initiative a compelling case study for international audiences.
The young women shared how the program empowered them to turn their creative passions into sustainable livelihoods. From weaving traditional textiles to marketing their crafts, their stories reflect the universal journey of women overcoming challenges through creativity and resilience. “This program opened new horizons for us,” one participant noted, underscoring how cultural engagement fosters both personal growth and community development.
Major General Khaled El-Labban, Assistant to the Minister of Culture, described the initiative as “a bridge connecting Egypt’s present to its future.” By promoting cultural pride and belonging, the program strengthens national identity while inviting global audiences to appreciate Egypt’s diverse heritage. Its emphasis on inclusivity and creativity offers valuable lessons for countries seeking to empower marginalized communities through culture.
Since its launch in 2018, “People of Egypt” has reached thousands through 81 cultural forums, engaging children, youth, and women across Egypt’s border regions. By fostering cross-cultural dialogue and celebrating diversity, the initiative serves as an inspiring example of how culture can unite communities and empower women worldwide.
