Canadian ambassador praises Egypt’s evolving ties and mediation efforts in Gaza
Cairo – Canada’s Ambassador to Egypt, Ulric Shannon, has hailed the increasingly strong relationship between Cairo and Ottawa, commending Egypt’s diplomatic efforts to broker a ceasefire in Gaza.
Speaking at a celebration marking Canada Day on Tuesday evening, Ambassador Shannon expressed his pleasure at returning to Egypt to serve once again, noting with warmth, “Having once drunk from the Nile, I feel fortunate to be back.”
He previously served at the Canadian Embassy in Cairo in 2005.
The ambassador highlighted the significant role played by the Egyptian diaspora in Canada, numbering in the hundreds of thousands, in strengthening cultural ties between the two countries.
Ambassador Shannon revealed that since he assumed his post two months ago, visa services for Canadians seeking to travel to Egypt have been reinstated—a move expected to boost business, tourism, and bilateral investment. He also recalled Canada’s recent hosting, in April, of the largest-ever Egyptian economic delegation.
Above all, he praised Egypt’s persistent diplomatic work to secure a ceasefire in Gaza, describing Cairo’s efforts as essential to regional stability and peace.
