Sisi urges broader mining partnership with AngloGold Ashanti
Egypt's President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on Monday met with the chief executive of AngloGold Ashanti, pledging support for the company's investments and calling for a broader partnership in the country's mining sector, the presidency said.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the opening of the "Egypt Mining Forum 2026."
Sisi received Alberto Calderon, AngloGold Ashanti's chief executive, in the presence of Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawi.
Stuart Bailey, the company's head of corporate affairs, and Hoda Ahmed al-Askalani, AngloGold Ashanti's country head in Egypt, also attended.
Presidential spokesman Ambassador Mohamed el-Shennawy said Sisi expressed appreciation for the strategic partnership with AngloGold Ashanti, which operates the Sukari gold mine, and stressed the state's commitment to supporting the firm's investments and providing a suitable environment for its business to grow.
Sisi said Egypt hoped to move the cooperation from one centred on running the Sukari mine to a wider strategic partnership in the mining sector, covering exploration, transfer of technology and expertise, training of national personnel, development of local supply chains and attracting more investment, the spokesman said.
The talks also reviewed the company's operations and its future expansion plans in the Egyptian market, as well as ways to strengthen cooperation in mining.
Calderon said he was honoured to meet Sisi and praised the Egyptian state's continued support for the company, as well as the efforts of relevant authorities to resolve any challenges facing its activities in the country, according to the spokesman.
He also outlined the company's main investments in Egypt and in other countries where it operates, and said Egypt was a priority investment destination for the firm.
Calderon said AngloGold Ashanti planned to inject further investment in the coming period in several promising locations in Egypt's mining sector, boosting chances of discovering and developing new projects similar to Sukari, the spokesman added.
Shennawy said the two sides held extensive discussions on expanding the company's exploration programmes in Egypt, particularly in gold mining. Sisi said the state was keen to provide all necessary facilities to support the company's activities, as part of Egypt's strategy to expand the mining sector, maximise its contribution to the national economy and draw more foreign investment, he added.
