Egypt and Greece’s Energean deepen partnership on natural gas, carbon capture
Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Eng. Karim Badawi, met today with Mr. Mathios Rigas, CEO of the Greek energy company Energean, for high-level talks aimed at strengthening cooperation on natural gas and advancing environmental sustainability.
The discussions, held at the Ministry’s office in the bustling New Alamein City, were also attended by Mr. Nicholas Katcharov, Energean’s Director in Egypt, and Mr. Walid Abdullah, the company’s Head of Government Relations and Security.
The meeting focused on expanding joint work in oil and gas, with special emphasis on embracing new technologies such as carbon capture and storage (CCS). Energean is recognized for its expertise in these clean energy solutions. Both the Egyptian and Greek sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to environmental sustainability and reducing carbon emissions, in line with global climate action.
Minister Badawi highlighted the growing strategic collaboration between Egypt and Greece, especially in the energy sector. He noted that Egypt has overcome significant challenges in recent years, thanks to increased exploration and investment incentives that have attracted global energy companies.
The Minister also pointed out Egypt’s investment in strengthening its gas infrastructure—diversifying energy sources and preparing for the future by securing supply ships for liquefied natural gas, which helps ensure energy security for homes and businesses nationwide.
Mr. Rigas praised Egypt’s stable political and economic environment, which he described as a strong draw for global energy investors. He shared Energean’s optimism about their ongoing projects in the Mediterranean, and expressed keen interest in deepening ties with Egypt—especially in new areas like carbon capture and fertilizer production.
This meeting signals a new chapter of innovation and partnership between Egypt and Energean, supporting not only local energy needs but also wider environmental goals.
