Unexpected lake in Egyptian desert attracts visitors

A newly formed lake near El Bahnasa in Egypt’s Minya Governorate has become a surprising attraction for local residents. Over recent weeks, families and visitors have flocked to the shores of the “Bahnasa Lake,” drawn by its scenic desert setting for photographs and leisure, particularly on weekends.

According to local researcher Hassan El Gallad, the lake began forming about four years ago in a former sand quarry after agricultural drainage seeped into the depression. Now, the lake covers between four and five feddans (roughly four to five acres), with water depths in some places reaching up to 30 meters due to previous quarrying activities.

Despite its beauty, experts have raised safety concerns. A government water research team’s early analyses show that the lake is comprised mainly of agricultural runoff and has a high salt content—around 8,200 parts per million—making the water unsuitable for drinking, irrigation, or animal use.

Local authorities, including the Minya Governorate, have issued public warnings. In a statement, officials confirmed the water poses no immediate environmental danger but urged residents not to swim in or use the water in any manner due to its high salinity and unknown long-term effects.

The new lake, while not a cause for alarm, highlights the complex impact of changing land and water use in arid regions. Authorities are continuing to monitor the site closely and have reminded the public to prioritize their safety when visiting.
